The bodo community of Rivers state have won a court case against Shell Nigeria over oil spills from the company's pipelines. In a statement, Shell claims to have accepted responsibility for the oil spills from onset and had offered compensation but lawyers to the Nigerian community said Shell offered $6,000 (thousand) to the whole community compared to over $80 million its been ordered to pay by the court.
Thousands of farmers and fisher men are expected to get over $3,000 each and $30 million will be channeled to clean up the oil spills which will take decades to clean.
