Elder Friday Akpan is the man whom along with 3 others and campaign group, Friend of the earth dragged Royal Dutch Shell's Nigerian subsidiary, Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) to a court in the Hague over oil pollution that damaged fish farms and other means of livelihood. Surprisingly, the court ruled in Elder Akpan's favour and (SPDC) was held responsible for damage done to Elder Akpan's 47 fish ponds.
The court ruled in a landmark case over accountability for oil pollution in Nigeria, though the ruling does not give a blank check to affected communities or individuals but it was seen as a step in the right direction. Shell was able to push the blame of oil spills on sabotage but the oil giant can be held responsible in cases where it can be proved that an oil spill happened due to Shell's negligence and shabby maintenance.
